Medical Management, Class of 2014

Vice President, Emergency Medicine Service Line
North Shore LIJ Health System

“I wanted to broaden my professional horizons and have more opportunities. The program at Simon deepened my business perspective and gave me the tools to continue to expand my career.”

After graduating from Syracuse University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing, Paula Fessler began her career in healthcare at Duke University, where she earned her master’s degree in the same field.  A dedicated family nurse practitioner, Paula worked with physicians and clinicians to provide direct patient care in a variety of settings.  After coming to the University of Rochester Medical Center, Paula accepted a leadership position in the Emergency Department at Strong Memorial Hospital.  “I was enjoying my new role but I didn't think I had all the tools I needed to successfully advocate for our patients and staff,” she says.  “That's why I pursued the master's from Simon. I learned more about business operations and the language that goes along with it.”

With the changing environment of health care, Paula believes professionals need to be much more aware of the business side of the industry. “This knowledge creates improve processes and allows us to continue to provide excellent patient care, in a cost-effective manner,” she notes.  It’s a perspective that she says helped her to land her new executive position.  “When I interviewed with North Shore LIJ Health, they said I had everything they were looking for with my clinical experience and business background.  I think my degree from Simon was a selling point to being considered for the position.”

As vice president of the Emergency Medicine Service Line, Paula’s main focus will be to ensure quality patient care and quality patient experiences across the entire service line. Currently, North Shore LIJ Health System includes fifteen emergency departments and several urgent cares.  Paula knows she will be relying on her Simon experience to accomplish the tasks in front of her. “My time at Simon taught me that measuring just one element of a system or process does not usually result in enough information to make a strong decision,” she says. “That seems especially true at North Shore LIJ where each department is unique.” Adding, “You can't roll out the same policy at different locations and expect them to be implemented in exactly the same way. However, using metrics and identifying barriers, will be a key part of creating and maintaining success at each location.”
