Melissa Derleth

Medical Management, Class of 2011

Associate Director of Nursing for the Department of Emergency Medicine,
Strong Memorial Hospital

“I attribute much of my professional success to my education at Simon. The opportunity to work in a team setting with different disciplines and collaborate toward one goal has played a huge part in my work in the Emergency Department. We have a lot of obstacles to overcome, but we’re doing that collaboratively and across disciplines, and that approach was fully developed at Simon.”

Growing up in Brooklyn, NY, Melissa Derleth envisioned a career on Wall Street, but her life took a different path when she decided to get into nursing, and she has never looked back. Melissa earned her undergraduate degree in Nursing at the University of Rochester, and after graduating in 1997, began her nursing career at Strong Hospital. She worked with the Transplant team, on an inpatient medical surgical unit. All along, she wanted to learn more about the business side of health care. “I’ve always been interested in where the industry is headed, what changes are taking place and how that affects care delivery at the bedside. Not so much to explain it to patients, but to staff nurses who work very hard day after day to deliver care in an industry that requires more focus on cost.”

Melissa has always been driven to advance in her career, but not in the way most people expect. “I wasn’t that person looking for the job title, I wanted the enrichment,” Melissa says. After working for 12 years as a staff nurse at Strong, Melissa decided to enter the medical management program at Simon. During that time, she shifted into a leadership role as a clinical resource nurse in the Emergency Department. After finishing the program, she was promoted to manage the nursing unit where she had worked as a staff nurse for over 10 years. After a year there, she became associate director of the Emergency Department. She says Simon definitely helped her to get there. “It was a great learning experience and I’m using the teamwork in my job every day. Everything that I learned at Simon related to health care has helped me in my career thus far.”
