“I think the program is best for those who have reached the pinnacle of what they can do with their current skill set and background education, and those who are willing to do something different, and are looking for the next step in their career. The program will introduce you to new people and possibilities that you can pursue.”

Andrew Smith was working as a pharmacist at Strong Hospital for about six years when he realized he wanted to do something different. “I wasn’t sure at the time, but I was thinking of going into management and learning more about pharmacy operations since I didn’t see myself going down the clinical path of residency,” he says. “The medical management program was a great way of exploring those possibilities to see if that was something that I truly wanted to do.”

What Andrew learned while in the program gave him clarity. “I found out that what intrigues me is operations for our department because much of what we do can be thought of as industrial production work.”

A transitional care pharmacist at Strong, Andrew is on a two-year grant to try to cut back on readmissions in Medicare fee-for-service patients. He is currently working on a project that examines IV room operations. “I’m dealing with a lot of people who I might not have met otherwise and I’m exposed to information that I might not have been privy to before the project,” he says. “The end result will help in my department.”

For Andrew, the key takeaway from the program has been the network of people it has opened up for him. He was recently promoted to a new position and says going through the program showed his commitment to growth and improvement. His advice to someone thinking about it: “Be willing to take a chance and sacrifice if you want to move ahead,” Andrew says. “Be focused and know what you want to get out of the program. You will have to put a lot into it, but there’s value in it. If you do that, it will definitely pay off.”
