Full-Time MBA, Class of 1983

Vice President and Controller,
Coca-Cola Company

It wasn’t until after she graduated from college that Kathy N. Waller ’83S (MBA) considered applying to business school. A history major at the University of Rochester, she got a job after getting her BA degree in 1980, first working in the budget bureau for the City of Rochester, then managing the summer youth employment program. Waller, 47, loved the work. After just a few months into it, her sister suggested that an MBA might be a good idea. Through The Consortium for Graduate Study in Management, which assists minorities who want to get their MBA, Waller applied to Simon Business School.

The decision to follow her sister’s advice paid off handsomely. Today, Waller is chief of internal audit at the Coca-Cola Company and a company vice president.

Waller’s intention was to study finance. But, during her first year, she discovered how much she enjoyed accounting and decided to make that her area of concentration. Her lack of work experience never posed a problem, she feels, particularly in her major. “None of the students had a lot of accounting background, so it really didn’t matter,” she says.

Her first job post-Simon was at Deloitte Haskins and Sells public accounting firm, in Rochester. According to Waller, who grew up in Atlanta, GA., this was where the snow hit the road. “When I was a student here, I never noticed it. But, especially as a public accountant, regardless of the weather, every Monday morning you were expected to drive to a small town where the roads were not well taken care of,” she says.

“I always kept a shovel, tire chains, and sand in the car.” That stopped after a few years, when Waller requested a transfer to her hometown.

Then, in 1987, she joined Coca-Cola Company as a senior accountant in the accounting and research department. In 2004, she was named chief of internal audit, and then, vice president in December 2005. She is also a member of the Simon Business School's Executive Advisory Committee.
