OptimaxAs Manufacturing Manager at Optimax Systems, Josh Dennie oversees three manufacturing shifts and manages production schedules, process operations, and supply chain. When Optimax management began looking for its next round of corporate leadership, Dennie was in the right place to earn a promotion from his prior position as Production Manager.

Dennie earned his undergraduate degree in Industrial & System Engineering from RIT and decided to complement his technical degree with a Simon MBA. “It was a joint decision with management to pursue my degree, and I was encouraged to take it on,” he adds. Dennie just completed his MBA in June of 2013.

“One of the big benefits of the Simon coursework was interacting with the other EMBA students. It was so helpful to hear about the real-world problems they were facing and get feedback on my issues,” notes Dennie. “Our study group became very close and I’m certain we’ll remain great friends.”

Already, Dennie is having significant conversations with the company’s CFO on financial topics that impact the bottom line. It only helps that CFO Tom Kelly is also a graduate of Simon Business School.

After seven years with Optimax, Dennie is pleased to see a trend toward bringing manufacturing back to the U.S. “People think manufacturing is tedious and repetitive, but I tell them that today’s manufacturing is far from that. We’re constantly looking for employees with math and science backgrounds who are technical and can multi-task. Surprisingly, people with cooking and music skills do well here, due in part to their ability to work methodically and employ both hands and eyes in their work.”

Dennie valued the high expectations of Professor Ron Schmidt during his coursework at Simon. “Ron challenged us to think from different perspectives. He liked to argue both sides of an issue to open our minds to how other people think and to work toward the best solution. I especially enjoyed his concepts on organizational theory and situational behavior.”
