Pride Mark 200Getting his Simon Executive MBA created big changes for Jim Barbato. Both in himself, and in his family’s business.

“Some people wondered why I was getting an MBA,” says Jim. “But this wasn’t about getting a piece of paper. It was about improving myself.”

Jim had grown up working alongside his father at Pride Mark Homes, a company that specialized in homebuilding and light commercial projects. But as Jim steered the company into new markets, he felt driven to know more.

“We were getting into different ventures,” says Jim. “I felt the need for more formal business training that would help me to analyze new projects.”

After considering several options for business school, Jim chose Simon. “Obviously, Simon has a great reputation,” Jim says. “But I felt their brand would also help me as I worked with banks and other businesses. Even when you travel, people recognize that name.”

As he began his studies at Simon, Jim was pressed to find the right balance between work, family and school. But in the end, the relationships he built with both his team members and professors made the experience both manageable and immensely rewarding.

“I’m much better now at analyzing every day business problems,” says Jim. “I structure them differently and see through them a lot quicker. I came away a different person.”

Those decision-making skills are already having a huge impact on his business, as Jim guides Pride Mark into new realms of real estate investment and land development.

For instance, Pride Mark is helping lead the way in the development of a new type of skilled nursing facility that is remarkably home-like and gives seniors the chance to move back to the communities where they grew up. One of the area’s largest nursing homes has turned to Pride Mark to build 20 of these state-of-the-art homes.

In Jim’s opinion, his experience at Simon has touched every aspect of his work: “Every single day, whether it’s a big decision or a small one, I’m just better at making them.”
